You Don't Have To Stay In Your Unhappy Job.

The reason I am following up contact with you, is that I sense that you are suffering at some level, because of your job or career.

Now that could be  a simple feeling of dissatisfaction with what you are doing (Is this is all there is?); or a feeling of real unhappiness which is getting you down.

For example, if you don’t feel safe that your job will last, this grows into ,”If I lose my job, how will I be able to pay the mortgage, look after the kids, or even, put food on the table?”

Feeling Underpaid.

Another common cause of unhappiness is the feeling that you are underpaid.

This affects you, because you feel devalued and also, because you want more money to fund your lifestyle.

Boring.

Now if you feel secure with your job and are getting paid fairly, then dissatisfaction often arises because the job is “boring,” each day, the same old same old.

Continuing with this Ground Hog Day situation destroys your feelings of contribution and when someone asks you, “What day is it today?” you answer, “It must be Blurrrssday!”

Your work life has become a featureless, grey blur: just a way of passing time, and of course, your life.

Not Acknowledging Your Contribution.

On another note, when you are  at work, do you feel appreciated for your contribution?

If not, underlying feelings of resentment will be there, whether you notice them or not, and these feelings grumble away at your self-confidence and self-esteem.

Not Making a Difference.

And the last of these most common sources of unhappiness, is not feeling that you are making a difference, by your efforts.

This is a particularly harmful situation, since when we feel that we are not making a difference, our self-worth gets ground down, and this is one of the significant paths to depression.

And it is the most common belief , because it is True!

Well True that is, if you haven’t followed a basic process.

When you apply for a job, (any job) without knowing what you are looking for, what skills you have, and whether the job suits you, you are certainly going to fail.

Do this a few times, and you lose hope, move to despair, blame yourself and  circumstances,  or even the world, for your failure.
This can only be resolved by a Process where you deal with your fears, get to know what you want, and where to find it.

Why Listen To Me?

Now , I personally, am having a very successful career, and yet as I look back, I can see the that there have been many parts that I didn’t like, and perhaps you can relate to some of them.

Some years ago, I arrived in Australia, after an overland trip from England.

I got off the boat in Freemantle, without a penny to my name.

I needed cash , and I needed it quickly so within 6 hours, I had a place to live (YMCA) and had a job to pay for it.

So during my career, I have taken jobs, based on career promises that never eventuated, jobs that were nothing like their job description, been with companies that went bankrupt, (leaving me with a double mortgage and a young family to support, which I did with hard, dirty labouring, again)

And also, amongst my career, I have had a range of extraordinary jobs, with some extraordinary companies and had a wonderful, fulfilling time.

You can see that I have done jobs that I loathed, loved, been stressed, been challenged, and so have a rich tapestry of experiences.

So I know what it’s like to be in a horrible job, just for the money and what it’s like to be in a totally rewarding, satisfying, career.
